Sustainable Farming Practices in Maharashtra

Research findings from our sustainable agriculture program show significant improvements in crop yield and soil health when farmers adopt integrated practices with community extension support.

Smallholder farmers in Maharashtra face a familiar squeeze: rising input costs, unpredictable rainfall, and soils depleted by years of chemical-heavy cropping. Our sustainable agriculture programme partners with Krishi Vigyan Kendras and progressive farmers to trial practical packages—organic matter restoration, water-efficient irrigation, and diversified cropping—that can spread through Farmer Field Schools.

What the data is telling us

Across demonstration plots in the last season, participating farmers reported steadier moisture retention, fewer pest flare-ups after initial transition years, and modest yield improvements on staples where soil organic carbon recovered. We publish plot-level notes (anonymised) so neighbours can compare conditions honestly, without marketing hype.

“Sustainability is not a slogan here—it is measured in soil colour, water hours saved, and whether a farmer sleeps easier before the monsoon.”

Farmer Producer Groups and fairer markets

We are strengthening Farmer Producer Groups so bulk input purchase and collective marketing reduce leakage to intermediaries. Trainings include basic grading, packaging, and digital price discovery so members can negotiate with confidence.
