Environment & Ecosystem Conservation

India's rich biodiversity is under increasing pressure from rapid urbanisation, deforestation, and climate change. Nishkam Shriseva Research Foundation works at the intersection of community action and scientific research to conserve natural ecosystems in rural Maharashtra, with a particular focus on the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats region.

Our environment programmes engage local communities — especially farmers and tribal populations — as active stewards of the land. By combining traditional ecological knowledge with modern conservation methods, we have helped restore native plant species, reduce soil erosion, and protect watershed areas that serve thousands of households.

We believe that environmental sustainability and community wellbeing are inseparable. Every tree planted, every wetland restored, and every awareness campaign conducted brings us closer to a future where nature and people thrive together.

  • Mass tree plantation drives involving schools, gram panchayats, and youth volunteers
  • Biodiversity mapping and documentation of native flora and fauna
  • Wetland and watershed restoration in collaboration with local authorities
  • Solid waste management and plastic-free village campaigns
  • Environmental education programmes in rural government schools
  • Climate resilience workshops for farming communities

Water Conservation & Sanitation

Access to clean water remains one of the most pressing challenges facing rural India. In water-stressed districts of Maharashtra, communities — especially women and children — spend hours each day fetching water from distant and often contaminated sources. NSRF works directly in these villages to build sustainable, community-managed water systems.

Our water conservation initiatives encompass rainwater harvesting structures, community borewell maintenance, check dams, and percolation ponds. We work closely with gram panchayats to ensure that infrastructure is owned and maintained by the community long after project completion, ensuring lasting impact.

Alongside water access, sanitation and hygiene awareness are integral to our approach. Open defecation-free village campaigns, construction of household and community toilets, and hygiene education sessions have contributed to measurable improvements in public health indicators in our programme areas.

  • Construction and maintenance of rainwater harvesting structures
  • Installation of water purification units in schools and anganwadis
  • Community toilet construction and open defecation-free village campaigns
  • Restoration of traditional step wells and village ponds
  • Hygiene and menstrual health awareness for adolescent girls
  • Training village water committees for long-term system management

Women Empowerment

Rural women in Maharashtra are among the most resilient yet underserved members of society. Despite bearing the weight of household responsibilities and agricultural labour, they often lack access to financial services, vocational skills, and decision-making platforms. NSRF's Women Empowerment programme works to change this by building individual capability and collective strength.

Our Self-Help Group (SHG) model brings women together in trusted peer networks where they save collectively, access credit, and support one another through shared challenges. These groups become the foundation for a range of interventions — from financial literacy and legal rights awareness to entrepreneurship training and market linkage.

We have witnessed extraordinary transformation as women who once had no independent income begin running successful micro-enterprises, speaking at panchayat meetings, and mentoring the next generation of girls in their communities. Gender equity is not just a programme goal — it is a foundational value across all our work.

  • Formation and strengthening of women's Self-Help Groups (SHGs)
  • Vocational training in tailoring, food processing, handicrafts, and allied trades
  • Financial literacy, savings behaviour, and credit access facilitation
  • Legal rights awareness including land ownership and domestic violence provisions
  • Entrepreneurship development with market linkage and branding support
  • Leadership training and facilitation of women's participation in gram panchayats

Youth Skill Development

India's demographic dividend can only be harnessed if young people — especially those from rural and marginalised backgrounds — have access to quality education, vocational training, and dignified employment pathways. NSRF's Youth Skill Development programme bridges the gap between rural potential and urban opportunity.

We run structured training programmes in collaboration with certified training partners, equipping young men and women with industry-relevant skills in areas such as computer literacy, hospitality, construction trades, and retail. Our approach emphasises not just technical competency but also soft skills, confidence, and career readiness.

Beyond placement, we invest in long-term mentoring and alumni support to ensure that youth who enter employment are able to sustain and advance in their careers. For those with entrepreneurial aspirations, we provide business development guidance and connections to microfinance institutions.

  • Industry-relevant vocational training in partnership with certified institutions
  • Digital literacy and computer skills programmes for rural youth
  • Soft skills, communication, and career readiness workshops
  • Placement assistance with local and urban employers
  • Entrepreneurship mentoring and business development support
  • Scholarship facilitation for higher education and professional courses

Sustainable Agriculture

Agriculture remains the backbone of rural Maharashtra, yet smallholder farmers face compounding challenges: erratic rainfall, declining soil fertility, rising input costs, and lack of access to market information. NSRF works alongside farming communities to demonstrate and scale sustainable agricultural practices that improve both productivity and environmental health.

Our agri-research wing collaborates with state agricultural universities and Krishi Vigyan Kendras to trial and disseminate improved crop varieties, organic soil management techniques, and water-efficient irrigation methods. Farmer Field Schools and demonstration plots serve as learning hubs where peer knowledge transfer happens organically.

We give particular attention to crop diversification, reducing dependence on chemical inputs, and connecting farmers to Fair Trade and direct market channels. By strengthening Farmer Producer Groups, we help small cultivators access better prices and reduce their vulnerability to exploitative intermediaries.

  • Organic farming promotion and natural pest management training
  • Soil health card preparation and soil rejuvenation programmes
  • Water-efficient irrigation (drip, sprinkler) adoption support
  • Farmer Field Schools and demonstration plot visits
  • Crop diversification and intercropping guidance for climate resilience
  • Farmer Producer Group formation and direct market linkage facilitation
